Settings button will quit, quit button will start and the play button will open the settings. That is intended, not a mistake.

If you are randomly dying, it might be the hearth attack which has a higher chance of happening on low stamina (It is a little annoying we, know so try to keep your stamina always high to minimize the probability.) or you might have stepped on a little pebbles on the ground. Also the heart attack event is trigged once per 15 second so you can calculate it to finish the game easier.

Other death reasons are the poisonous carrot and running out of stamina.
